In January 2020, Leiden Law School and the Europa Institute will host a regional final of the European Law Moot Court Competition (ELMC) - the most prestigious moot court competition in the field of European law. Every year, student from approximately 100 leading law schools participate in solving a fictional case on a topical case concerning EU law. The competition takes the form of a written and oral phase, with both written and oral submissions being presented in English and French. Based on the quality of the written submissions, which are evaluated by independent academics, practitioners, and judges, the 48 best teams will qualify for the our regional finals held in Europe and beyond. The winners of each regional final will qualify for the ‘All-European Final’, where teams present their arguments at the Court of Justice of the European Union, in front of actual judges from the Court. Leiden Law School has a strong track record in the ELMC, and in recent years has won prizes for Overall Winners (2013), Best Written Submissions (2015), and Best Advocate General (2016).

Leiden Law School is very much looking forward to welcoming the participating students in January 2020, where their advocacy skills will best tested by the academic staff of the law school, as well as the ELMC judges. The case this year concerns the relationship between religious freedoms and animal welfare, legislative procedures and legal basses, as well as the status of Member States exiting the Union. More information about the ELMC can be found at: https://www.europeanlawmootcourt.eu/
